A Letter to the Membership — May 3, 2010
May 3, 2010
Dear Academy Members:
Last Monday, the IAWTV hosted a "town hall" meeting for the New York membership of the Academy. The IAWTV will host a second town hall meeting in Los Angeles on May 12th at 7:00pm at the WGA, West offices. The goals of these meetings are to discuss and give feedback on the 2nd annual Streamy Awards, explain how the Streamys LLC and the IAWTV organizations operate, and provide an open forum for members to ask questions and provide feedback. We did not have a formal vote on any official matters last Monday.
We would like to thank members who came out last Monday as well as those members who gave us your feedback, but weren't able to attend. The meeting was productive, at times passionate and a step in the right direction. It was clear that we want an organization that represents the entire community and one that we can be proud of. Also, it was clear that transparency, oversight over the Streamy Awards and member involvement in all facets of the organization are incredibly important.
Much of what was discussed was how to make two separate organizations - Streamys LLC and the IAWTV - work together as one. We believe it is in the best interest of the Academy, the Streamy Awards, and community-at-large to achieve this. We (Brady & Michael) met on Wednesday and agreed to work together to create a unified proposal that the board can take to the entire Academy membership for feedback. Our goal is to share the proposal with the membership by the May 12th LA member meeting, if not sooner.
Once we agree on the right path for the two organizations to work together, we will get down to the important business of building the organization. We will need to establish a new board of directors, board of governors, and a better Streamys nominating process. This will take time, patience and the direct involvement of the membership.
The first step to achieving these goals is open and consistent communication. We are planning monthly member meetings in both LA and New York. We will announce the next meetings for both cities on May 12th. We will also create monthly email updates. An IAWTV.org online forum will be added shortly.
We look forward to meeting with the LA membership next week.
Sincerely,
Brady Brim-DeForest
